Amended in 2014, BS 8417 gives best-practice recommendations for the preservative treatment of wood and wood products to protect these elements against bio-deterioration in end-use situations. These guidelines include determining whether or not there is a need for treatment, and specifying the type of treatment. It also sets the industry benchmark for the penetration and retention requirements of wood preservatives tested to BS EN 599 – covering boron and creosote preservatives too. BS 8417 applies only to solid wood and glued, laminated wood.

How does it work?

BS 8417 first helps the user to determine the need for treatment, before specifying the relevant treatment for wood – including joinery timber and construction materials. The standard then explains the preservative treatment of wood in detail and concludes with sampling and testing.

Who should buy it?

•Carpenters
•Manufacturers of wood products
•Suppliers of wood components
•Inspectors
•Safety regulators
