Weathering can be defined as the chemical and physical changes that occur when timber is exposed to the weather. However, weathering should not be regarded as a problem, but rather a natural process. This Wood Information Sheet explains the causes of weathering and its significance to timber performance.

Timber has been used for construction throughout history and the performance of timber out of doors is well understood. It has long been known that it is possible to extend the useful life of timber through good building/construction design and profiling wood components to shed water and thus dry down more quickly. The type and rate of weathering will vary with geographical location and the level of exposure to:
Rain.
Snow and ice.
Sunlight - particularly ultraviolet (UV) light.
Wind.
